Running With Lions Response Project – Radio Plays

In response to our previous production Running With Lions by Sian Carter, we opened up submissions for two radio plays to be professionally recorded here at the Lyric. The two selected plays received both financial and dramaturgical support and explored themes of family, wellbeing, grief, and hope.

Passing Through by Esme Faith, directed by Robert Awosusi stars Siah Harrell and Temi Majekodummi.

Esme Faith, Writer, said: “I’ve changed the name of the play to Passing Through to highlight the belief that on the last night of the Nine Nights the spirit will pass through their home to say their final goodbye.

Based on my own experiences with understanding my grandmother’s death, Passing Through, discusses the ritual of death in West Indian cultures while looking at what it feels like to be of the culture but as an outsider looking in. On the last night on the nine nights two siblings discuss whether their grandmother will pass through for the final time.”

Our second radio drama Eulogies by Lashay Green, directed by Robert Awosusi stars two of our Springboard trainees, Adelaide Banks and Georgia Rose.

Lashay Green, Writer, said: “Eulogies is a poetic introspection of the self, family, mental health and healing.”

Robert Awosusi, Director, said: “It has been a blessing to be a part of a process that provides another avenue for emerging creatives to develop their craft with different mediums. We received a number of solid submissions but picked Esme and Lashay’s plays due to how strongly they resonated with the Lyric’s Main house production at the time, Running with Lions; thinking about how our relationships with our families and loved ones shape us, and how that shaping continues even after they’ve left us. They are both incredibly smart and considered writers, and if they’re making work like this now I’m really excited for where their journeys will take them next. Shout out to our group of brilliant actors who again I’m very excited to see much more from! If you enjoyed or connected with the pieces please show the creatives some love!”
