Lyric Hammersmith Theatre Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan To Direct A New Production Of The Children By Lucy Kirkwood, Starring Olivier Award Nominee Dame Meera Syal
Lyric Hammersmith Theatre have today announced a new production of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children, directed by Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan starring Olivier Award-nominated Dame Meera Syal (A Tupperware of Ashes, Noises Off) as Hazel.
In a production marking the play’s 10th anniversary, The Children will run at the venue from Wednesday 02 September – Saturday 03 October 2026 with tickets on sale now at lyric.co.uk.
Rachel O’Riordan, Director of The Children and Artistic Director of Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing Luck Kirkwood’s thrilling play to the Lyric this September in its 10th anniversary production. Since its debut in 2016, it has become a modern classic and the themes of inter-generational accountability and environmental crisis have only become more relevant. It’s funny, moving and asks big questions around personal morality- what would any of us do if we were asked to do something so terrifying?
It’s also a joy to welcome Meera Syal back to the Lyric stage for the first time since 2019’s smash-hit Noises Off. I cannot wait for audiences to experience this bold, thrilling story anew in 2026.”
Meera Syal added: “I’m thrilled to be back at the Lyric Hammersmith and working with Rachel O’Riordan on Lucy Kirkwood’s brilliant, timely play.”
Hazel and Robin have survived a catastrophe. Living on the edge of a radiation exclusion zone, Hazel still practices her yoga and Robin’s brewing parsnip wine. They are trying to keep going, clinging onto normality.
That is until their old friend Rose knocks on the door. With her she brings old memories, buried secrets – and a proposition. One which tests their loyalty and forces them to confront the limits of their debt to the next generation.
The creative team includes Set & Costume Design by Gary McCann, Lighting Design by Anna Watson and Sound Design by Holly Khan. Full cast and creatives will be announced soon.
This production has been made possible by the generous support of Mark & Sarah Crosbie.
