For The Newcomers
As part of For The Culture: Celebrations of Blackness FestivalIn partnership with Talawa and their new co-production of Duke Ellington’s sensational Jazz musical, Play On!, we'll be presenting a selection of scenes and songs from Leian John-Baptiste's new musical. Leian was selected as part of For The Culture's artistic residencies programme.
This is a coming of age story about 19 year old Black British girl, Cece, who wants nothing more than to finish her assignment, get into her University of choice and get away from her step-mum. Like most teenagers, she wants to find her place in the world and figure out where she fits in. Cece can’t get a wink of sleep, she’s restless, dreaming about her beloved late mother who made her promise she’d make it to Carnival this year, in full costume of course.
In her search for answers, Cece realises her only option is to find the courage to go back to the one place she’s been running away from. With Carnival but days away, nothing to wear and strict step-mum whose answer to everything is no, Cece must overcome the odds and find a way to make it to Carnival in time for judging point, or risk breaking her promise to her Mum and jeopardizing the grand prize.
The sharing will be followed by a Q&A with the artist.
