The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is looking for child actors to perform in the upcoming production of Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black & White by Alice Childress, directed by Monique Touko.
Ideally performers will be based full-time in Hammersmith & Fulham and/or West London.
The Play
Set in the deep south of the USA in 1918 when interracial marriage was illegal, Julia, a black seamstress, and Herman, a white baker, are defying all odds with their secret love.
Please note the play has adult themes including racism and prejudice, there are instances of strong racist language within the play.
The Roles
- PRINCESS (female, small 11+ yrs to play 6 years on stage)
Suggestions 11 yrs + to play 6 years, small build. Princess is the daughter of a white neighbour in South Carolina in 1918, she is looked after by a local black neighbour, Mattie. She is cheerful, playful and confident. Middle class, and already aware of her race. South Carolina accent. We are looking for a very confident young actress who is good with accents (though there will be accent help) and takes direction well. Please state any useful experience.
- TEETA (female, small 11+ to play 8 years on stage)
We are looking for a young Black actress to play 8 years on stage – but must be 11 years plus. Small build. Teeta is the young daughter of Lula, a poor woman who makes candy in order to make ends meet. They struggle financially. She is at times anxious, but also can hold her own, particularly with the younger Princess. South Carolina accent. We are looking for a very confident young actress who is good with accents (though there will be accent help) and takes direction well. Please state any useful experience.

All performers must be available for the full rehearsal and production period.
