The Stories We Tell was a theatre cultural exchange residency that brought together a collective of young black queer women and genderqueer people from the UK, Kenya and South Africa.
Created in partnership with Sibikwa Arts Centre and the National Youth Theatre of Kenya, the project brought together six participants – two from each country- culminating in two weeks of devising and live performance in South Africa in August 2022. Lead by British-South African Director Ameera Conrad, South African Writer and Director Tankiso Mambola, the collective of performers and creatives came together to ask the questions “Why do we love who we love and how does it change us?”.
The final performance interrogated and celebrated African and British queer experiences, exploring gender, sexuality, ethnicity and nationality. Captured by Kenyan filmmaker Sheila Gakii Kimathi, the devising process and final sharing will be edited into a short film to be shared on this page in the coming months.
The Stories We Tell is a partnership between the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre of the UK, Sibikwa Arts Centre of South Africa and the National Youth Theatre of Kenya. It is kindly supported by the British Council and The Daneford Trust.
