#12JobsOfTheatre – Fiona Sowole, Assistant Producer

Welcome to #12JobsofTheatre.

Over 12 days in December we’ll be telling you about 12 different jobs at the Lyric to give you an insight into the varied and vital jobs that contribute to the work we make.

Each of the wonderful people that are currently in those positions have shared how they got there and we hope it will be helpful to those thinking about pursuing a career in the arts.

Next up is Fiona Sowole, our Assistant Producer.

In one sentence, can you explain what your job is?

As a producer I would with along my team to get shows to our main house stage, to our studio theatre, on tour and into the West End. We also work on some building based events, festivals, and activities that involve our local community and our brilliant supporters.

What made you want to work in theatre and where did you start?

I started my career in theatre as a Young Associate the Young Vic theatre in Waterloo, my role was part of a new scheme the theatre had developed to give young people from Southwark the experience they needed to start their career in the industry, within my role I worked alongside the Taking Part department on all of their projects from Schools to adults, I got to develop and produce my own project as well as learn how Mainhouse shows are produced. The Young Associate scheme lasted 9 months after which I was given my first ever professional job at Donmar Warehouse.

What is your top recommendation for someone who wants to be an Assistant Producer

Network via social media to find opportunities, produce your own stuff, events, festivals, shows or projects – do it! Create the work you are passionate about! You don’t need a degree, you can learn on the job. I did!

What is your favourite production at the Lyric that you have worked on and why?

My favourite produce that I have worked on at has to be (well I have two) A Dolls House and Cinderella Panto. I loved both of these productions because of the diversity and the female empowerment of these productions, and I enjoyed working with the creative teams.
