Our February Campaign on the Climate Emergency

The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has declared a climate emergency. It is our ambition to be net carbon zero by 2030.

This February we are launching a campaign on the theme of climate emergency. We will explore what we might do differently as an organisation and as individuals as we live through this climate crisis. Throughout this campaign we will share our learning and invite our partners and audiences to join the conversation.

Take a look at our plan below and join in the conversation using @LyricHammer and #ClimateEmergency

Week 1: w/c Monday 03 February

What’s an emergency?

The Lyric has declared a climate emergency, but what does it mean to live in a state of emergency? Does this really change everything? This week we will be re-sharing our climate emergency declaration with our audiences and we will kick off our staff book group over lunch – finding green inspiration in books, stories and plays.

Week 2: w/c Monday 10 February

Spare the Air!

We create world class theatre in the heart of Hammersmith, but Hammersmith is a borough that has poor air quality and the eighth highest percentage of early deaths attributable to air pollution in London. We pledge that all deliveries to the Lyric, wherever possible, reach us via Parcels Not Pollution, a zero-emission electric cargo bike service. We will work with our audiences to increase engagement with e-tickets for our shows.

Week 3: w/c Monday 17 February

Make Do & Mend

The Lyric has pledged to be net carbon zero by 2030 and, if we are to get there, we need to know what the real impact of each of the things we do and buy. How can we collectively make better decisions that still fits in with our lives in a way that feels hopeful and fun?  We will engage our family audiences during our half-term Little Lyric show with a clothes swap for babies and reusable nappy event.

Week 4: w/c Monday 24 February

Taste of Honey

This week we will be asking ourselves, what does the future of food look like in the context of emergency? In our Bar & Grill and Café, we will continue to widen our vegan and vegetarian menu – launching our own beyond meat burger. The Lyric is now home to 180,000 buckfast bees – a direct response to that fact that almost 90% of the world’s wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination.
