Seventeen Rehearsal Blog: Youth is Wasted on the Young

Assistant Director Paloma Oakenfold on Seventeen Rehearsals
Blog #2

The week started with a visit from real seventeen year olds; they were actually members of Young Lyric.

They immediately leapt onto the set in that energetic way young knees and diets of red bull can. We discovered the older actors actually have a surprising amount in common with their teenage counterparts.

‘More so than all the Queens I’ve played’ Margot chirped

However, it was the set that highlighted a defining difference. An enormous climbing frame shaped in a figure of eight curve juts into the space, whilst swings occupy the upstage right.

The swings are elongated so that they seem to reach up far beyond the rafters of the theatre, dripping down as if from heaven. I love the way the infinity curve frame and the swings give the impression of the ticking pendulum of a great clock, or a metronome continually counting.

The teenagers were hanging, hooking, leaning, climbing and lounging all over these apparatus as effortlessly as if they were really trendy, articulate, tailless monkeys and it was fascinating to watch.

It was amazing how loud they were, the way they speak over each other and their tactile-ness. How they vocally and physically inhabited space was completely joyful and celebratory. It was a great to see both generations using the space and working together and gave us real food for thought and discussion.

A big thanks to the Young Lyric members who joined us this week. It was a blast.

The play is coming on remarkably. Our rehearsal days are getting longer and our work is now truly cut out for us there are just two weeks until first preview eek!

But the cast are full of good spirit and we take on our final two weeks with muchos cochonas come what may!

Until next time,

Paloma x
